Dialysis
Dialysis is a procedure to remove harmful waste products and excess fluid from the blood, which is normally done by the healthy Kidneys. Dialysis is often needed when the kidneys stop working properly and no longer take care of the body's need.
When it is needed :
1. You need dialysis when you developed End Stage Renal Disease- usually when your kidney functions drops to 15% or less or you have developed severe symptoms like shortness of breath,
fatigue, muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting caused by your kidney disease.
2. Acute kidney injury like renal failure due to snake bite, poisoning, septicaemia etc.
Types of Dialysis:
Haemodialysis: This type of Dialysis involves a machine, outside your body, which removes blood from the body and filters it through a Dialyser and returns the cleaned blood to the body. This process may take 3-5 hour and is done in a hospital having dialysis department. Haemodialysis is needed 3 times a week or as advised by your Doctor.
Peritoneal Dialysis: In this type of Dialysis, your blood is cleaned inside your body. It uses the inside lining of the abdomen (Peritoneum) as the filter, because Peritoneum contains many tiny blood vessels like the Kidneys and thus can be used as a filtering device. Before the dialysis starts your Doctor will make a small incision near the belly button and a catheter is inserted through the incision into the peritoneum. This catheter stays in place permanently. A special fluid (contains pure water, salt and other additives) is pumped into your abdomen through the catheter and as blood passes through the inside lining of the abdomen, the waste products and excess fluid from the blood is absorbed in the fluid. The fluid is then drained away. This dialysis is typically done at home.
